A better question to ask is, "Can I get my money back?" I'm sure Cara is going to post on all the historical inaccuracies that run rampant in this movie, so I'm not going to go there. My question is: did anyone else notice that Roland Emmerich plagiarized himself? Cue geeky sci-fi side.
I love Stargate (both the movie and the offshoot tv series), I will admit this and you can go ahead and call me a geek. I'm a geek. How could you not love a show about an archaeologist who gets to travel to different worlds meeting alien civilizations that influenced cultures on Earth (not that I believe in this theory, but it is a neat idea you have to admit that). In 1994, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich wrote and directed a hit movie called Stargate. Although I give them both writing credit, I'm more inclined to think that Devlin did the majority of the writing after seeing the last few of Emmerich's movies. In a nutshell, a parasitic alien race that inhabits human bodies and lives almost indefinitely (The Go'auld) came to Earth and enslaved the Egyptians and ruled as Pharaoh and the whole pantheon of Egyptian deities. They lasted for a few millennia until they were overthrown by the people they had enslaved. So they flew off in their pyramid-shaped space ships and left Earth alone to wreak havoc elsewhere in the universe (this is where the series picks up with different planets and different civilizations). They happened to leave behind a "stargate" that when connected to other gates, allows people to travel to different worlds. Okay, so what the hell does this have to do with 10,000 B.C.?
Well, Emmerich, in this craptastic movie, uses the whole Egyptian overlords theme again. The Pharaoh does not quite seem to be human and they even explain the bad guys' origins as possibly coming from "beyond the stars". How about what the Egyptian city looks like? Are you just re-using the set from Stargate? I've seen that exact same pyramid before. Hmmm. Give me a break! Geez man, if you're going to rip someone off, don't let it be yourself! That's just pitiful! Have the decency to plagiarize someone else, someone with more credibility than you! Someone who can actually write a decent screenplay!!
Okay, I'm done ranting. Just had to get it out. :) Please, save yourself the money and see something better!
